Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

With 4S Now Tops Among Big 3, Apple Grabs 52% Of Industry Profits; Doles Out Huge Bonuses As you’ve likely heard, there’s been a lot of upside that’s been reported of late when it comes to Android’s mobile OS. Thanks to Nielsen , we know that, yet again, Android is leader among mobile OSes, now accounting for 43 percent of U.S. smartphone marketshare, up from 39 percent in July; while Apple’s iOS remained at 28 percent over the same period, placing it in distant second. Of course, Apple has a little bit of vertical integration going on, and in spite of their lagging well ...
Siri And The iPhone’s Physical Keyboard
November 6, 2011 – 3:09 pm | No Comment
Siri And The iPhone’s Physical Keyboard The backlash was inevitable. Siri has had a bit of an image problem this past week. Just like all technology propelled by the tailwinds of hype, it hit the inevitable wall of tech punditry. This magically turned the stream of largely positive stories into a river of negative stories under the guise of things like: “the voice of reason” or the “wake up call”. It’s the oldest trick in the book and it never fails to generate massive pageview energy. It happens 100 percent of the time. But ...
Apple Promises iOS 5 Update In A Few Weeks To Suck Less Battery Life

Apple Promises iOS 5 Update In A Few Weeks To Suck Less Battery Life For the past couple of weeks, I’ve heard the same thing over and over again. “The iPhone 4S is awesome, but…” And it’s a big “but”. The battery life. It sucks . Well, to be clear, it sucks for some users, but not all. For example, I’m not noticing anything out of the ordinary on my device. It’s essentially the same battery life I got with the iPhone 4 running iOS 4, as far as I can tell. But today Apple has acknowledged that some bugs are ...

Like the iPad version, the new app has Touch instruments like keyboards, pianos, organs, drums, guitars and basses. It also allows you to plug in your electric guitar to record music or a mic to record vocals. GarageBand’s “Smart Instruments” let you choose from a new library of custom chords, which is an update from the older iPad-only ...
Siri Ported To iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G
October 30, 2011 – 1:31 pm | No Comment
In a moment as historic as Alexander Bell’s call to his assistant, an iPhone hacker wrote on Twitter that he had successfully ported Siri to the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch. He wrote “Actually, it just worked,” informing the world that he had completely ported Siri to the iPhone 4 and that more versions are on the way. The hack requires a jailbroken device. By copying the app onto the device, the iPhone 4 can call up Siri and, more important, connect to the Siri servers. You can follow ...

W3i Suggests iOS Developers Use MAC Address As UDID Replacement Mobile app monetization and distribution network  W3i  is announcing the results of its tests to determine whether or not an iPhone’s MAC address can serve as a replacement to the UDID (the unique device identifier), which Apple is phasing out as a way for developers to track an app’s users. According to W3i, developers can and should begin tracking the iPhone’s MAC address as a UDID alternative, as it has successfully seen Apple approve its own application where this is the case. Unfortunately, this advice is arguably ...

Apple’s Upcoming Grand Central Store Will Be Ready By Black Friday The holidays are right around the corner, and just like every other brand and retailer, Apple is getting ready for the rush. The iPod turns 10, celebrates a decade of destroying physical media It's hard to believe, but it's been exactly ten years since the iPod was first unveiled, ultimately changing the music industry forever. The iPod wasn't the first, it wasn't the smallest, it didn't have the largest hard drive, but it did have an iconic style and simple to use interface that led march away from CDs. When the history of Apple is written the iPod (perhaps more than the iMac, OS ...
AT&T Surpasses 1 Million iPhone 4S Activations
October 20, 2011 – 8:04 am | No Comment
AT&T Surpasses 1 Million iPhone 4S Activations It would seem that the iPhone 4S is one helluva record breaker. Apple recorded over 1 million pre-orders in the first 24 hours the phone was available, and a record 4 million devices sold in the first weekend. That’s double the amount of any other iPhone’s first weekend sales. But the iPhone 4S isn’t just breaking records at Apple. AT&T has just announced that its iPhone 4S activations have topped 1 million. To date, AT&T has never seen so many activations during an iPhone launch, which says ...
