Command & Conquer coded in HTML5
January 24, 2012 – 9:57 pm | No Comment

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

The saga of changing from an iPhone 2G… to an iPhone 2G
June 3, 2010 – 4:05 am | No Comment
The saga of changing from an iPhone 2G… to an iPhone 2G My wife's iPhone 2G is broken. The power switch always thinks it is being pushed down, which means that the iPhone turns itself off fairly regularly. As you might expect, it's fairly annoying. Because I have a lot of nice, good, and generous friends, many of whom are also gadget folks, I asked on the Twitter if anyone had an iPhone 2G that was sitting in a drawer after they had upgraded. My friend Jim Ray ...
Verizon Denies Apple Support Once Again [Verizon IPhone]
June 2, 2010 – 6:29 pm | No Comment
Verizon's John Johnson tells Beet.TV that they're not planning on supporting Apple mobile devices in the near future. People who want to believe that the iPhone is coming to Verizon soon will question what he means by "near future" or "support" or "Apple mobile devices," whereas people who don't really care will take the statement at face value and leave it at that. The iPad could be the best mobile accessibility device on the market

The iPad could be the best mobile accessibility device on the market In 1995 Dr. Norman Coombs, a blind professor of history at the Rochester Institute of Technology and chairman of EASI: Equal Access to Software and Information wrote that the rapid adoption of a graphical user interface (GUI) would close the door on computing for the visually impaired. This was in largely in response to the Microsoft's Windows OS, but his point was well taken regarding all GUI based computing. Speech output systems, at that time, were based ...
Ten Years from now, will this be the Shuffle?

Ten Years from now, will this be the Shuffle? This is a concept model of what the iPod will look like come 2020. According to my source, this futuristic Shuffle will have “unlimited music and battery capacity”. I don’t doubt that as much as my source, because if this Shuffle has access to Wi-Fi, it could easily have access to as many songs as the user can buy, thanks to cloud computing. As for unlimited power, it would have to be solar powered, I guess. Assuming that I’m here ...
Steve Jobs introduces the Death Star
May 31, 2010 – 6:07 pm | No Comment
This is an idea so beautiful in its execution that you wonder why it hasn't been done before -- take Steve Jobs' rapturous introduction of the iPad, and put it over the footage from Star Wars of the Death Star briefing. It's a perfect geeky mashup -- I especially love Han Solo's indifference ("It's just a big iPod touch, Chewie"), and the random jeers from the audience. Also, Google Maps on the Death Star looks a little different than on my phone, ...
Skype for iPhone now runs over 3G

Skype for iPhone now runs over 3G Well pass the lord and praise the ammunition: Skype for iPhone now works over 3G, allowing you to make Skype calls – presumably long distance – without using your regular minutes. According to the latest update you can “Call using your 3G connection. Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G are free until at least end of August 2010, after which there will be a small monthly fee (operator charges for data will still apply).” This extra fee sounds a little rough if you ask me. It’s not like Skype ...

App review: Cadence keeps the beat

App review: Cadence keeps the beat "Lace up your shoes (oh, ay, oh, ay!) / Here's how we do / Run baby run / Don't ever look back" Are you like me? Do you like the running? Do you like running with your iPhone? I love to run, and I need music. Just the right song can turn a mediocre run into something transcendental. But what was it that separated the motivating songs from the energy-sapping ones? Turns out, it's at least partly the beat. A song ...
