Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

App demo: Scales and Modes
June 29, 2010 – 5:20 pm | No Comment
Scales and Modes is a simple but elegant app for listening to and learning about, well, scales and modes in music. I found it a nicely designed effort and it would seem like a nice companion to the budding music student. It's compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. It looks particularly awesome on the iPad. Check out the video for a full demo.
The Anix band films their entire video using an iPhone 4

The Anix band films their entire video using an iPhone 4 I realize that many bands have budget for their videos, and I’m guessing The Anix has one that is quite low. However, I’ve seen low budget videos before, and this one looks pretty good. It may be the first one to ever be filmed with an iPhone 4. It was done “minutes after taking it out of the box”, with the devices on tripods. Considering the power of the new iMovie for iPhone 4 the exclusive one, I am not surprised that you could ...
First Look: Tom Bihn Ristretto bag for iPad

First Look: Tom Bihn Ristretto bag for iPad I blame Steve Sande for my newest iPad-related purchase. Well, there's a lot of things to blame Steve for, but it was his reviews of the Tom Bihn Western Flyer and Checkpoint Flyer that had me checking out the company he bought the bags from last year. Tom Bihn is based in Seattle and has the distinction of being among those rare companies that still makes its products in ...

Thieves targeting iPads in NY Apple Store
June 23, 2010 – 8:34 am | No Comment
Thieves targeting iPads in NY Apple Store Apple's products have been increasingly targeted by thieves since those now-ubiquitous white earbuds first announced, "I'm carrying an expensive Apple doohickey! Mug me!" iPhones and iPods are often too hard for ne' er-do-wells to resist, and now iPads have joined their ranks. The New York Post reports that the West Side Apple Store was robbed of iPads twice in the last week. In both instances, opportunistic thieves nabbed boxed iPads that were being unloaded ...

Parrot AR.Drone hits the US this September for $299 Parrot promised to reveal the launch details for its AR.Drone at E3 this week, and it's now delivered -- the remote-controlled quadricopter will be available in the U.S. this September for $299. Of course, this is hardly your ordinary remote-controlled quadricopter, as it's not only controlled via WiFi, but via an iPhone, iPad or iPad touch -- something we got well acquainted with both at CES and on the ...
Goaaal for iPhone and iPod Touch is free for a limited time

Goaaal for iPhone and iPod Touch is free for a limited time This is Goaaal for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It is free for a limited time, and something tells me that 100 percent price cut is a result of a certain World Cup that is going on. Apparently, the gameplay involves using kicking skills to score many shots from the penalty spot with progressively difficult goalies. I have no idea how long the “limited time” is for this free game, so you might want to get in on this action ...
Google’s New Indexing System Is Fully Caffeinated [Google]

Google’s New Indexing System Is Fully Caffeinated [Google] Google's latest web indexing system, the tool that pre-scans the entire web to have a ready answer to your search query, promises "50 percent fresher results for web searches." It's called Caffeine. And it comes with staggering Google search stats. The main difference with Caffeine is that, rather than search one entire group of sites (represented in that lead graphic as a layer), then another, less prioritized group of sites, then yet another less prioritized group of sites, everything ...
Pocket protector, meet your cousin: the iPad suit

Pocket protector, meet your cousin: the iPad suit Apple products often spawn ecosystems of product categories to facilitate their existence. The iPod and iPhone, for instance, gave birth to speaker docks, FM transmitters and protective cases. And now an ecosystem of products is materializing for the iPad: they include cases of all sorts, bean bag lap rests and, yes, clothes. Suits, to be specific. Upscale Manhattan tailor Mohan's Tailor Shop, which boasts a clientele including Barry Bonds, Walt Frazier and Gary ...
TUAW Review: Carcassonne finally, gloriously comes to the iPhone
June 5, 2010 – 11:25 am | No Comment
TUAW Review: Carcassonne finally, gloriously comes to the iPhone After from Small World, Carcassonne is one of the most anticipated designer board game apps to hit the App Store. It took a little longer than expected, but everything from the basic Carcassonne game is here. Nothing more, nothing less. There are no river tiles, no traders, no princess or dragon. It's completely easy to play, and the plethora of options - local or online human opponents, very well-created AI players and a new solitaire ...
