Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

New Apple patents for iPhone, wide trackpad, Final Cut Pro, and Apple Mail Patently Apple's got a whole slew of new patent applications from Cupertino today. First up are the actual product designs of the original iPhone and the second-gen iPod shuffle. Apple's moved on from both of these designs to newer and better things, but they're putting the patents in anyway, just in case anyone wants to rip off the rounded iPhone edges or the little shuffle's clip design. There are also two MacBook patents: one for the latch holding the battery ...
Bump App gets an upgrade
November 14, 2010 – 3:55 pm | No Comment
Bump App gets an upgrade I am sure that most iPod Touch/iPhone users are familiar with Bump, a way sharing between iDevices by touching one to another. In addition to the ability to: “Share photos, music, contacts, calendar events (iOS4 only); become friends on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn”, the App now allows users to listen to a full song via YouTube or check out preview and then buy the track on iTunes. It is still free, too. Related Post...
App Review: Reiner Knizia’s Ra

App Review: Reiner Knizia’s Ra Reiner Knizia's classic Egyptian-themed auction and tile-collecting game Ra is not an easy one to figure out. When playing around a table, you need to collect the right tiles, look over to see what other people are collecting, keep an eye on the status of the sun/bid tiles and, in general, process a lot of changing information. If you enjoy this gameplay but don't like setting up the game ...
N-Control Avenger gives your Xbox 360 controller hair triggers (video)

N-Control Avenger gives your Xbox 360 controller hair triggers (video) We happen to like our existing Xbox 360 controller, squeaky triggers and all, and though we're eagerly awaiting an improved D-pad it hadn't really occurred to us that some might prefer an overhaul. N-Control, however, has done just that with this insane lever-filled shell, which wraps around the gamepad to provide simultaneous control over a host of inputs at once. The idea is that you'll never need to take your thumbs off the analog sticks ...
Review: Worms 2 Armageddon For iOS
November 10, 2010 – 9:00 pm | No Comment
Review: Worms 2 Armageddon For iOS At last! Worms is finally on the iPad in a form we can be proud of. The previous version of Worms on iOS was obviously hastily put together, with poorly resized graphic elements, interface problems, and ridiculous 3D backgrounds that served no purpose and likely drained your battery. To say nothing of the lack of features and modes! I was thoroughly disappointed. But Worms 2 Armageddon fixes nearly every problem, and if you’re a Worms fan, it’s definitely worth your $5. Pros: Full selection of weapons from ...
Hasbro making 3D goggles for iPhone

Hasbro making 3D goggles for iPhone The whole 3D movement may now have officially jumped the shark with the introduction of the My3D from Hasbro. The idea of sitting in front of the living room TV and wearing a pair of goofy glasses in order to see an artificial reproduction of the real world is bad enough, but we really can't see many people going for My3D. Think of the US$30 My3D as a 21st century answer to the old View-Masters that ...

Mutant Bash TV Is Id Software’s First Rage Game for iOS [Games]

Mutant Bash TV Is Id Software’s First Rage Game for iOS [Games] Having seen the phenomenal Infinity Blade, I'm not impressed by the much simpler Mutant Bash TV—the first game that will use the Rage engine for iOS. The graphics, however, are extraordinary, as you'd expect from id software....
