Apple’s Off-The-Charts iPhone And iPad Sales

Sometimes you have to see things to truly appreciate their magnitude. Apple’s latest quarter was so massive that MG had to write two posts about it: $46 billion in revenues, 37 million iPhones sold, 15 million iPads. The chart above, which comes from Francesco Schwarz, using data from Apple and Asymco (see a fully interactive version here ), shows how unusual this quarter was for Apple. The quarter was driven by iPhone and iPad sales. And you can see that by looking at the blue and red lines, which show unit sales of each. iPhone sales went from 17 million the quarter before to 37 million. They more than doubled in a single quarter. But look closely at the iPad line. What I just noticed for the first time is that Apple sold almost as many iPads last quarter as it sold iPhones in the previous quarter. And now it is selling as many iPads as iPods. That red line is going to keep on going up. Will it ever catch up to iPhone sales?

iBooks Author and iTunes U released

In addition to the release of iBooks 2, Apple also announced the launch of iBooks Author – a free app downloadable from the Mac App Store that lets anybody easily create textbooks suitable for the iBooks App. GarageBand for iBooks? Sure sounds like it. While I haven’t given iBooks Author a spin, it is supposed to be easy to use and powerful. Best of all, it doesn’t cost a thing – so you can expect a lot of new books to hit the scene in the near future.

Apple also announced the launch of the iTunes U app – designed to give educators and students everything they need on their iOS devices to teach and take entire courses. With iTunes U, users get access to the world’s largest catalog of free educational content, with over 20,000 education apps and thousands of books in the iBookstore that can be used in their school curriculum. Looks like it’s going to be a good time to get an iPad for college this year. Find out more about iTunes U.

Sony’s Z1000 Android-Powered Walkman Takes Aim At Apple And Samsung

Sony’s really looking to give their Walkman line of mp3 players a shot in the arm with their newest addition to the lineup. Dubbed the Walkman Z1000, it’s Sony’s first Android-powered music player and it’s gunning to give Apple and Samsung a run for their money. The Z1000 originally debuted in Japan this past September, but Sony’s execs have apparently deigned it nifty enough to transplant to the U.S. market. With its 4.3-inch display, it’s a fair bit larger than an iPod Touch or the original Samsung Galaxy Player but it makes up for the added size with some extra functionality. On top of the usual features like the ability to download apps from the Android Market, the Z1000 series features DLNA support so users can sling media onto their compatible TVs. It also sports a microHDMI port if the television in question isn’t quite up to snuff, and Sony’s S-Master MX amplifier, which should come in handy when it comes to …

The Gizmon iCA Might Be The Ultimate iPhone Camera Case

There are iPhone cases and then there are…more iPhone cases. There are probably close to a gazillion different iPhone cases available now. But none are as elaborate as the Gizmon iCA — at least none I have seen. The case — if you call it just a case — is made of 32 different polycarbonate parts, it features a conversion lens mount with additional optional lenses, and adds a working shutter button and optical viewfinder. There is even an optional faux pancake lens for additional street cred with the camera nerds. It gets better, too. No, seriously, this contraption is genius. The case is available in white, black, and retrotastic orange. Both corners feature eyelets for a neck strap because, you know, if you have such a case, it deserves to live outside of a pocket. Rooted MotoACTV Brings Web Browsing And Angry Birds To Your Wrist

Fitness watches are one thing, but how about a fitness watch that lets you play a few levels of Angry Birds in between wind sprints? Motorola’s MotoACTV debuted alongside the Droid RAZR not too long ago, and one developer has finally taken it upon itself to unleash its full potential. The hack comes courtesy of developer Chris Wade , whose past endeavors include the Dingleberry PlayBook root method and the (ill-fated) iEmu project . While he’s best known for his software projects, he’s quite the hardware buff too — before working getting to work on a root process, he felt the need to tear the thing apart first. Unlike some of the other Android-powered watches we’ve seen pop up in recent months, the MotoACTV actually sports a half-decent spec sheet. During the teardown, Wade found a 600 MHz OMAP 3630 processor and 256 MB of RAM, which provides enough oomph to handle nearly everything Wade threw at it. Review: The Nook Tablet Is A Real Android Slate In Ereader’s Clothing

The Short Version In the mad rush to push out more and more Android slate products, Amazon and Barnes & Noble are like a calm port in the storm. Their devices are touted as ereaders but, after a bit of digging, you find that they are now considerably more interesting – and compelling – as tablet products for an entry level market. They are not threatening nor are they particularly difficult to grasp. In short, they are the perfect neophyte’s tablet, a cross between the simplicity of an e-ink ereader and a fully-featured mobile device. It’s good enough at both that people buying it for one purpose will be pleased with the device’s other strengths; depending on what you want, it’s either an Android slate in ereader’s clothing or vice versa. Amazon’s new Fire, which we’ll review shortly, takes a certain tack – low-priced, cloud oriented content consumption – while the Nook Tablet takes a decidedly different one. Klipsch Image S4A headphones are for Android

If you’re looking for headphones to go with your iPod or iPhone, most of the time you won’t have any trouble locating them. The market seems to be filled with accessories catered to those devices. However if you try looking for Android-compatible versions, it’s a bit more challenging. Seeing how Android is getting even more popular now, I guess manufacturers are starting to pay attention to devices that run the operating system.

Klipsch has just released a new set of headphones aimed at Android devices. Called the Klipsch Image S4A, these in-ear headphones are similar to the Image S4 and S4i (for the iPhone) except that it’s been designed to work with Android phones and tablets instead. In conjunction with a free app, Klipsch Control, the headset’s onboard button allows users to play, pause, skip music; answer and end calls; and enable voice search.

The Klipsch Image S4A are available now and cost £89.99 ($142) each.
