Kia UVO2 is your Korean big brother, we go hands-on

Kia's first entry into the infotainment realm had a slightly rocky start, but the Korean automaker is back at CES this year with UVO2, its second-generation in-dash telematics and connectivity platform. The big features in UVO2 include automatic crash notification, incorporated road-side assistance, service reminders and a brace of new vehicle tracking and geo-fencing features to make sure your teens don't stray too far, go too fast or stay out too late. Partner all that with an updated iPhone app ...
Engadget Mobile Podcast 121: CES 2012 – 01.12.2012

This was the QVC edition of the Engadget Mobile Podcast, featuring full-on hand modeling by Brad and some really nice close-ups of the new halo devices of CES 2012. A forklift also abducted Myriam. You won't see that in the audio-only podcast, so use your best fan fiction imagination this time or shoot the video to your media streaming device of choice. All that, plus the triumphant return of the newly Fu Manchu'd Sean Cooper. Zing! Video after ...
Personal Search Service CloudMagic Arrives On Mobile For Fast Gmail, Docs & Twitter Search

CloudMagic , the personal search service that indexes your Gmail, documents, contacts, calendar and Twitter updates, is now available as a mobile app. The release follows a major update for the service this past fall, which added the ability to search Twitter and a move to host your personal index in the cloud. This switch is what enables CloudMagic to work across multiple devices, including now, iPhone and Android smartphones. Using the new mobile app, CloudMagic is surprisingly fast – and far more useful than the phones’ ...
Wi-Spy Helicopter and Intruder RC toys put the childlike wonder back into spying on your neighbors

Sick and tired of spying on the neighbors the old-fashioned way? Good news, all. Interactive Toy Designs showed off two new products in its not-so-subtly named Wi-Spy line of remote control vehicles. Really driving the notion home is the Intruder, the name given to the little red sports car. The helicopter, on the other hand, is called just that, though we're sure you can intrude upon people with the thing, if you really put your mind to it. Both vehicles have built-in cameras that ...
When You Have To Buy Their Love, You’ve Lost

Over at WindowsITPro , Paul Thurott outlines some details of Microsoft/Nokia’s (purported) marketing plans for Windows Phone in 2012. Amongst them: a $10 to $15 commission for retail sales people who sell Windows Phone handsets over Android or iOS. In turn, John Gruber asks : “ If this strategy was on the table, why didn’t Microsoft start this a year ago? “ Here’s why: because it’s an admission of failure. Microsoft’s obstacle isn’t an easy one. When people walk into a phone store in search of a ...
iOS 5.1 update neglects audio issues on iPhone 4S

I do not know whether you are one of the iPhone 4S owners who are affected by this strange phenomenon that sends the “best iPhone yet” into a muted stance whenever an outgoing call is made, but if you happen to fall into this category, needless to say, life can get pretty annoying at times, especially when you are on a rush and have deadlines to meet, only to have technology fail you during the more crucial moments. Not only that, ...
Flurry: 1.2 Billion Mobile Apps Were Downloaded Over The Holidays

With nearly 7 million new Android phones and iPhones activated on Christmas Day, an app-downloading frenzy was a foregone conclusion. App research firm Flurry estimates that a combined total of 1.2 billion apps were downloaded during the holiday week between December 25-31. That compares to an average of 750,000 mobile apps downloaded per week earlier in December, or a 60 percent jump. This is the first time app downloads surpassed the one-billion mark in a single week. About little less than a quarter of those apps (242 ...
Stop! It’s A Really Bad Time To Buy Most Gadgets!

Did you know that your brain releases dopamine when it processes something new? At least that’s what the Internet told me . Apparently dopamine is key in establishing a craving, which could be why ever-updating sites like blogs or Reddit are so popular. There is always something new. It could also be why some people always crave more gadgets. You’re bored with your Galaxy SII and hope the Galaxy Nexus will satisfy that burning desire, which it probably will ( unless you’re MG ). But don’t do ...
Facebook’s Mobile App Has A Big Holiday Week On iPhones, Bigger On Android

Millions of new iPhones and Androids got activated during and after Christmas this year — and what have people done with their new devices? They’ve downloaded Facebook’s mobile apps, of course. I’ve been watching this trend for a few years, and the past week has been the biggest yet, based on the numbers visible in the AppData app tracking service. Facebook’s iPhone app grew by 4.1 million monthly active users and 1.7 million daily actives, which was beat out by its Android app, which gained 5.2 million ...
