Command & Conquer coded in HTML5
January 24, 2012 – 9:57 pm | No Comment

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

InputDynamics makes dumbphones smarter with tap-to-touch tech
September 12, 2010 – 9:22 am | No Comment
InputDynamics makes dumbphones smarter with tap-to-touch tech You can't afford a proper QWERTY keyboard on your phone, much less a expansive multitouch slate. What to do? Well, if a UK startup named InputDynamics has its way, you'll just tap on any surface of your handset. The company's developed a piece of software called TouchDevice that uses a phone's embedded microphone to analyze the acoustics inside, reacting to your finger's impact on the surface with a touchscreen-like input on the device. New Scientist reports that's not ...

September 11, 2010 – 8:03 pm | No Comment
Alliance of the jailbreakers: Cydia acquires Rock It's official: the two largest jailbreak app stores for the iOS platform, Cydia and Rock, are getting together. ModMyi is reporting that Jay Freeman (AKA Saurik) and Mario Ciabarra (AKA psuskeels) have been working through an acquisition of Rock Your Phone, Inc. by SaurikIT, LLC for several months now. That deal became official last night, and over the next 10 days there will be a transition from Rock to Cydia ...
Sega bringing Chu Chu Rocket, others to iPhone soon

Sega bringing Chu Chu Rocket, others to iPhone soon Sega America hosted an iPhone gaming event earlier this week, and the lineup of titles they've got coming to the App Store this fall is a gamer's dream: Chu Chu Rocket (my favorite Dreamcast game!) is coming to iOS, along with classic side scrollers Gunstar Heroes and Altered Beast, Sonic the Hedgehog Episode 1 (the brand new 2D version of Sonic), and a free-to-play strategy/RPG MMO called Kingdom Conquest. TouchArcade was there at the event, and they say that ...
Apple may be bringing FaceTime to Macs and PCs

Apple may be bringing FaceTime to Macs and PCs Apple's FaceTime video chat that's built into iPhones and new iPod Touches is neat, but it's got a couple of issues holding it back. First, the fact that you need to be on Wi-Fi makes it difficult to predict when someone will be available to FaceTime with you. And having it only work on such a limited number of products makes things tough as well. At least Apple looks to be fixing at least one of these.

Steve Young Football for iPad ads spoof 90s commercials
September 9, 2010 – 5:04 pm | No Comment
Apparently there is an iPad game behind these crazy commercials, but we posted them mainly because they're hilarious. The spot above will be familiar to anyone who grew up in the '90s as a spoof of the old Crossfire commercials that took a mechanical board game way too seriously. You'd probably be forgiven for noticing that the game, Steve Young Football, which is an over the top wacky version of the sport itself, actually has a feature where you can ...

iPod touch review (2010)
September 7, 2010 – 8:26 pm | No Comment
iPod touch review (2010) At Apple's last event, Steve Jobs called the iPod touch the company's "most popular iPod," and it's easy to understand why. In just a few short years, the iPhone-with-no-phone has kept in lockstep with Cupertino's halo device, benefitting from the same kind of constant hardware and software updating that has helped turned the iPhone into an iconic gadget. The touch has been right alongside the iPhone's meteoric rise in popularity, becoming the go-to second-pocket slab for millions. There ...
Run app updates: News on the Nike+, Runkeeper, and Runmeter fronts
September 7, 2010 – 12:05 pm | No Comment
Run app updates: News on the Nike+, Runkeeper, and Runmeter fronts I admit it. I've always thought that the Nike+ shoe sensor thing was kind of lame. Even though I actually do own the right shoes, I never thought it worth while to pick up the optional pedometer sensor just so I could take advantage of the built-in iPhone feature. I know that there are people out there who really loved using the Nike+ features on their iPhone but I've much preferred using other tracking apps and skipping the ...
Got 10 bucks and 5 minutes? Turn your iPhone 4 into a 12X Microscope
September 6, 2010 – 1:54 pm | No Comment
Got 10 bucks and 5 minutes? Turn your iPhone 4 into a 12X Microscope See that shot above? That was taken with an iPhone 4. Don’t believe it? See how in the video after the jump. Armed with nothing but a $7 mini-microscope and the cheapest (around $3) back-protecting iPhone case they could find, the guys over at Crabfu managed to convert their iPhone 4 into an on-the-go microscope camera capable of taking shots at a 12x zoom level. Ten bucks for at least a few hours of wandering around my house looking at everything way closer than I probably should? ...
