Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Tap Tap Tap developer says 5% of Camera+ users make in-app purchases

Tap Tap Tap developer says 5% of Camera+ users make in-app purchases So yes, says Tap Tap Tap boss John Casasanta, US $70,000 isn't to be sniffed at, but it still represents only five percent of Camera+'s two MILLION users using the in-app purchase facility to buy the $.99 "I (heart) Analog" effects pack. Well, whether or not you sniff at 70 grand depends rather on how much you earn elsewhere; Casasanta, in fact, has sold two million copies of Camera+ (currently on sale at $.99 instead of $1.99) so, yeah, they can consider it small ...
iCab Mobile for iOS is like a pro version of Safari

iCab Mobile for iOS is like a pro version of Safari When I first used Safari on my iPhone, I was blown away by how much better it was than any other mobile browser, but since then, Apple hasn't done much with it. A recent Safari update brought significant speed increases, but there are many other limitations which finally led me to try something else, namely iCab Mobile. Is improving your web browsing experience on the iPad or iPhone/iPod touch worth $2? Before you object to paying ...
Has The Age Of Totemic Gadgets Passed?

Has The Age Of Totemic Gadgets Passed? The lads here, mostly Devin and Matt, were talking about Everyday Carry , a website dedicated to the things we carry in our bags, pockets, and purses. Most of the EDC gear looks pretty heavy-duty – many EDCs include guns and long stickin’ knives for, you know, those times when you need to stick stuff ( Merlin Mann’s is particularly interesting, for example) – and from the looks of the site it seems lots of people have totemic items, items of power that they carry to get ...

10 Things That Simply Need To Be In iOS 5 WWDC. It’s like Christmas for OS X and iOS developers. Each year, they flock to San Francisco’s Moscone Center, anxiously awaiting the pair of gifts that Apple annually bestows: the new iPhone, and a bundle of new features upon which they’ll build their next big thing. If whispers and hearsay hold true, this year’s WWDC will only feature the latter; the iPhone 5, says the rumor mill, won’t be showing its face until Fall. Instead, this show is purportedly going to be all about iOS and OS ...
Caption Contest: Russian prez is impressed by iPad 2

Caption Contest: Russian prez is impressed by iPad 2 In non-Soviet Russia... presidents tend to receive some pretty swanky high-tech gifts. Dmitry Medvedev, leader of the good people of Russia and one of the few men to successfully rock denims with a suit jacket, has been bestowed with a fresh new iPad 2 and his facial expression seems to suggest he was immediately irradiated with blasts of magic, fairy dust, and the smiles of innocent children from across the world. We just hope he hasn't seen the ...

AT&T CEO promises improved service from T-Mobile deal BusinessWeek had a chat recently with AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, and he told them that the pending merger with T-Mobile would have the intended effect of improving service and capacity on the networks for all of AT&T's devices, including, of course, the iPhone. "Virtually on the day you close the deal, getting a 30 percent lift in capacity in New York City: that's a significant improvement in call quality and data throughput," he said. That's a nice big promise to ...

AmEx Gets Into Mobile Payments And Takes On PayPal With Serve Uh oh, Paypal; looks like you’ve got a new challenger in the person-to-person payments space. American Express has just announced the launch of their new money spendin’ service, Serve . At its foundation, it’s just a fancied up PayPal, allowing users to send one another money via e-mail address (as long as both users have Serve accounts.) Past that point, however, it’s got a few cool twists; you can pull funds from your account into a refillable pre-paid card, or you can create “subaccounts” that let other ...
