Well, you have to hand it to the strategy team over at Zipcar . Arguably the largest on-demand car-sharing network, Zipcar went public last year and not long after saw its market cap cross $1 billion . It’s since fallen back, and with collaborative consumption and the market for car-sharing heating up, the big players have to make moves. Zipcar has since forged a partnership with Ford, making it the largest provider of cars for Zipcar’s University program , and, in December, the company took a controlling stake in Spain’s largest car-sharing network, Avancar . Today finds Zipcar making another strategic move to get its mitts in fellow car-sharing companies, again with a focus on universities, whose students are among the most eager adopters of car-sharing models. What do I mean? The company today announced that it is a lead investor in the $13.7 million series A financing of Wheelz , a junior, university-focused version of itself. Insignia NS-7PDVDi Portable DVD Player Review–Heaven in a Power Outage

Submitted by admin on April 2, 2010 – 9:23 amNo Comment

The folks out at Geeks.com sent us another exciting thing to bring you today, a device which may well offer the secret of universal harmony (in car travel with the kids). Today, we’re talking about the Insignia NS-7PDVDi.

The Insignia NS-7PDVDi is a widescreen portable DVD player that features a seven inch widescreen display, built-in speakers, a built-in iPod dock to both charge your iPod as well as play from it, iPhone audio capability (though it won’t charge your iPhone), compatibility with SD, MMC and MS memory cards, and a variety of compatible media formats, including DVD, MP3 and compact disc. It also has an included remote control and cigarette lighter adapter for running on the road.

I actually tried this out last night to play the movie reviewed over on Screenhead today, Brian Pulido’s The Graves, part of the After Dark Horrorfest. Surprisingly, it actually performs pretty well given the overall size of the package. Admittedly, a seven inch screen isn’t exactly comfortable to watch, nor are the built in speakers to listen to, but for crying out loud, the thing FITS IN YOUR PALM. You can carry this literally anywhere, easily, without much problem. And when you start adding on hardware–I hooked a pair of computer speakers with subwoofer to it and got amazing sound quality. I can only imagine what I’d get if I used a head mounted display for the video. Oh, and I have to spare a thought for the incredibly well-designed system that lets me stash the remote IN THE PLAYER ITSELF. That’s just awesome, especially for a person who’s been known to lose remotes.

But even without all the extra accoutrement, what you’ve got here may well be the single best way ever to survive a power outage of any length. Chances are you could run this off even solar power. And considering you can pick one of these up for sixty bucks at geeks.com, well, you could certainly do vastly worse than the Insignia NS-7PDVDi.

The Good

Portable DVD player. It’s just too awesome.

Surprising quality from such a small unit

The Bad

Video and audio both take time to get used to

Score 7 / 10
